Course aims
Create preconditions for developing knowledge and skills for working on the basis of an approach that is directed at the strengths of children and families and is solution-centred. Students learn related principles, different techniques that are necessary for supporting and empowering the client.
Brief description of the course
Child and family in risk. Life span of a family. Strengths-centred approach. Child- and family-centred approach. Solution-centred approach in work with children and families. Creating a relationship of trust: inclusion. Including creative techniques. Principles of solution-centred approach (well-formulated objectives and solutions). Social constructionism. Good questions. Types of questions. Position of one who does not know it all. Techniques of finding strengths, solutions (questions of coping, relationships, questions demanding exceptions, questions of scale, questions of miracle). Model of solution-centred counselling: first meeting, following meetings and finishing. Non-voluntary client. Resistance. The role of specialist as supporter. Self-reflection.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is aware of strength-based principles and solution-centred techniques in order to help the client by finding/re-finding strengths and looking for solutions;
- knows how to formulate objectives that correspond to client’s wishes and solutions that are based on client’s expectations;
- has acquired skills to use at least two solution-centred approach techniques;
- has developed the skills of teamwork, analysis, presentation;
- has learned to use good questions to empower people;
- has learned to analyse oneself (knowledge, values, principles, skills).
