Brief description of the course

The course provides a systematic overview of the central areas of Russian language correctness: graphics, orthography, punctuation, pronunciation, word formation, and speech culture. It covers the development and brief history of Russian graphics, the principles of writing technique, and the orthographic system of the contemporary Russian standard language. Special attention is paid to the main principles of orthography – orphological, phonetic, traditional, and grammatically differentiated principles – and to their application in practical language use. The course analyses the most important spelling rules, the principles of punctuation, and the use of punctuation marks in different types of sentences and texts.
The course supports the conscious acquisition and consolidation of the norms of the Russian standard language. Students learn to distinguish between standard and non-standard language use, understand possible variation within norms, and analyse the causes of deviations from language norms. The course addresses correct pronunciation, the causes of lexical, grammatical, and stylistic errors, and ways to avoid them. An important part of the course is the correction of students’ oral and written language use in accordance with the norms of the contemporary Russian standard language.
Speech culture is approached both from the perspective of language norms and from the perspective of communicative effectiveness. The course examines the content-related and speech-related criteria of speech culture, the pragmatic-functional principle of communication, and the choice of appropriate language use in different communicative situations. The course helps students expand their vocabulary and develop the ability to use Russian accurately, consciously, and appropriately in both oral and written communication.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the systems of Russian script, orthography, punctuation, and speech culture, as well as the interrelations between them;
- knows the basic rules of Russian spelling, pronunciation, word formation, grammar, and lexis, as well as their areas of application;
- analyses normative phenomena in Russian from the perspectives of script, orthography, punctuation, and speech culture;
- applies the rules of Russian script, orthography, punctuation, pronunciation, and word formation in accurate oral and written communication;
- develops their Russian language proficiency through conscious vocabulary expansion and the consistent application of language norms.
