Course aims
Overview of theories regarding sociology of knowledge. Comparison of educational systems in different countries.
Brief description of the course
Theories in the sociology of education. Functionalist theory (Durkheim). Conflict theory (Collins, Bowles, Gintis). Education and economy (Becker, Thurow). Human capital theory. "New" sociology of education: theories of cultural reproduction, haridussotsioloogia (Bourdieu, Bernstein). Educational system and social selection (Goldthorpe, Halsey). Educational expansion (Meyer). Educational systems in different countries. Typology of educational systems.
