Course aims
After the course the student can conduct descriptive and inferential analysis of social scientific data including: select appropriate analysis methods, make statistical data transformations, present results and make inferences.
Brief description of the course
The course consists of lecture-seminars and practical lab seminars, which require active participation from students.
Students must prepare for lecture-seminars by working through the given reading and other tasks. This will be required for discussions in the lecture-seminars. Practical computer lessons will teach the use of the statistical software package Excel and provide a practical application of the methods learned in lecture-seminars.
The course will cover the following topics:
- General population and samples, data and variables;
- Distribution of variables and summary parameters;
- One- and two-way cross tables for descriptive statistics;
- Data transformations;
- Statistical inferences and testing; confidence intervals, hypothesis testing;
- Associations between variables, association tests: t-tests chi-square, correlation and regression;
- Presentation of analysis results.
The course requires the submission of a 2-part
exam assignment, which includes the practical application of learned analysis methods in Excel and the presentation of results. Individual exam assignment will be graded and will form the final grade for the course.
The course is accompanied by a Moodle course by the same name, which gives access to all the materials as well as exam assignments.
See the schedule from Moodle.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the theoretical foundations of descriptive and inferential statistics and their use in social science research;
- has practical skills to implement the acquired theoretical knowledge by carrying out data analysis, presentation and interpretation of results;
- presents analysis results and makes statistical inferences;
- chooses appropriate data analysis methods among the variety of methods covered in the course;
- uses Excel for data analysis on an intermediate level independently.
