Course aims
To provide a deep theoretical and practical understanding of the concept of gratitude.
To develop the ability and confidence to discuss the complexities of gratitude when applying it to professional and personal life.
To give students the opportunity to reflect on how to practice gratitude in their context and how to overcome the associated challenges of doing so.
Brief description of the course
The importance of gratitude to enhance our social and emotional wellbeing and improve our cognitive processes has gained momentum in recent years as a topic of research in a number of fields. In this unit students will critically reflect on the meaning and role of gratitude and its specific relevance to three main areas: relationships, education and wellbeing. Drawing on contemporary research in a number of fields, including positive psychology, students will be introduced to the theoretical and practical dimensions of gratitude as it relates to these areas and invited to engage in discussion as to its place in their present or intended context. Students will also be given the opportunity to reflect on their own gratitude, apply it to their learning of this unit and others they are studying. An important aspect of this exploration is to
critically examine the dilemmas and complexities of gratitude, its interplay with resentment, and some of the cross-cultural differences.
