Course aims
To understand the ways culturally constructed phenomena organize and direct individuals’ thoughts, emotions and actions in different social contexts.
Brief description of the course
What is culture and why the psychology needs one; the perspective of cultural psychologist – from where it came and why; theory, research, challenges and methodology of cultural psychology; the role of culture across a range of psychological phenomena (perception, cognition, emotion, development, social psychology).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a brief overview of the theoretical perspectives of cultural psychology, research and methods;
- understands the definition of culture in the field of cultural psychology and understands the role and contribution of cultural psychology in psychological science;
- understands differences and similarities between cultural psychology and adjacent disciplinies (e.g., cross-cultural psyhcology, cultural antrophology);
- is able to consider different phenomena studied in psychology in context f cultural psychology;
- is able – to some extent – to critically analyse the methodology of cultural psychologists;
- learns to notice potential culture specific factors that may shape the psychological properties of individuals.
