Course aims
Give an overview of the different forms of addictive behavior and the possibilities of aiding.
Give knowledge of the most common illegal drugs in Estonia, basing the classification on the effect to the central nervous system.
Give an overview of the development of drug addiction as a process.
Introducing different strategies and models for prevention of addictive behavior.

Brief description of the course
Characteristic features of addictive behavior and the different forms of addictive behavior: clinical and theoretical. The origins of addictive thinking and self-deception. History of development of addictive behavior as a social problem in Estonia. Etiological models of addiction. The need and possibilities of aiding in case of drug-related psychic and behavioral disorders. Different forms of addictive behavior: clinical and theoretical. Prevention of addictive behavior at different levels. The specifics of primary prevention at school, used methods.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the different models and fostering background factors of addiction development;
- develops a general understanding of the different forms of addictive behavior and aiding possibilities;
- knows the qualities of the most common drugs that affect the central nervous system and is able to describe the short- and long-term effect of drugs;
- is able to differentiate the effectiveness and appropriateness of prevention strategies of addictive behavior in working with different social groups.
