Course aims
1. Give an overview of the development of one of the oldest branches of applied psychology – school psychology – and of the contemporary directions in international school psychology.
2. Introduce the different roles and main work areas of a school psychologist in Estonia as well as in the international context.
3. Give an overview of educational special needs (ESN) and the necessity and possibilities of aiding ESN students.



Brief description of the course
Overview of the history of school psychology in the international context. The development of school psychology in Estonia, the professional standard of a school psychologist and the procedure of assigning the profession. New directions in international school psychology. Introduction to the conceptualization of educational special needs.
The main work areas of a school psychologist: assessment, intervention (counseling and consulting), training, research, prevention of problems. Introduction to the conceptualization of educational special needs.

Students work through the required reading, which is the basis for group work or individual visualized presentations at seminars.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the development of one of the oldest branches of applied psychology – school psychology – and of the contemporary directions in international school psychology;
- knows the main roles and main work tasks of a school psychologist;
- is able to evaluate the extent of the need of supporting or aiding the pupils’ development and is able to plan different intervention strategies.
