Course aims
Create preconditions for understanding the meaning of climate change, its impact on
Estonia, Europe and the world (different regions) and to support the importance and understanding of the
need to adapt to climate change. Encourage the development of knowledge on the climate monitoring
system, the state of the climate system and climate change.
Brief description of the course
Politics, definitions (weather, climate). Scepticism (debate). The nature of the
climate system, its states, components, influence. Greenhouse gases, currents, climatic phenomena
(Southern Oscillation, Walker circulation, monsoons, NAO and AO). Past climate data (computer
internship). Forecasts (models, projections, scenarios on the example of destinations). Extreme
phenomena and their effects (extreme precipitation, storms, floods). Impact of climate change on people
(systems) and social economy (agriculture, forestry). Solutions, adaptation measures and policies.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has ability to understand the concept, development and importance of the climate system and climate change today;
- has ability to relate climate system components and states to climate change;
- has ability to know and apply the acquired knowledge in the development of climate change adaptation strategies and measures.
