Course aims
- Support the development of basic knowledge necessary for conducting scientific research.
- Support the development of basic skills in metrology and statistical data processing.
- Support the development of an understanding of the role of measurements and data analysis in scientific research.
Brief description of the course
Elementary measurement methods and introduction to data analysis. Measurement of various parameters, calculation of measurement uncertainty in direct and indirect measurements. Least squares method. Use of computing in carrying out measurements and analysis of measurement results. Distributions – uniform distribution, Gaussian distribution, Student distribution. Presentation of data, measurement uncertainties on graphs using LibreOffice or MS Excel. Simple ways of applying computing in solving and illustrating scientific problems.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can determine statistical quantities characterizing measurement accuracy;
- can perform basic data processing necessary for the analysis of scientific experiments, and illustrate data graphically;
- is able to analyze experimental or research results and compare them with theoretical results and those presented in scientific literature;
- - can apply computer programs (spreadsheets) to solve, illustrate, and analyze scientific problems.
