Course aims
Core subject. To give knowledge of the functioning principles of the nervous system at the molecular level.
Brief description of the course
Anatomy of the nervous system and nerve cell morphology.
Membrane potential, ion channels. Nerve cell communication, synaptic transmission. Neurotransmitters and their receptors. Neuropeptides. G-proteins, secondary messengers.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows principles for the organization of the nervous system;
- has basic knowledge of electrophysiology, terminology and understanding of the activity of ion channels;
- knows the chemical structure, function and regulation of receptors and ion channels;
- knows signal transduction between nerves and effector cells;
- has basic knowledge of intracellular signaling and the roles of second messengers;
- has basic knowledge of the formation of memory;
- has basic knowledge of sensory transmission.
