Course aims
To provide knowledge of the relationships between the structure and properties of biomolecules, the methods and applications used for their analysis. Emphasis is placed on knowledge of current trends and practical knowledge of laboratory analytical methods involving biomolecules. The course is Functional biomolecules I practical continuation course.
Brief description of the course
Biomolecules, biopolymers, hydrocolloids. Biomasses, their variability, modern industrial raw materials. Functionalities of biomolecules, modification, enzyme technologies, biotechnological applications. Bioactivity, natural products used in folk medicine. Characterization of biopolymers, shape and size of molecules. Molecular sieves, nanonetworks, biomembranes, filters. Applications of biopolymers in various areas of life - medicine, food technology, agriculture, art. Biopolymer-based materials, active substances, visco-elastic systems. Assessment of bioeffects, cell cultures, animal models. Valuation of biomass. Rheological properties of biopolymers, laboratory techniques for analysis, purification and fractionation of biomolecules. Interactions between biomolecules. Special software for visualization of molecules and graphical presentation of research results. Smart technologies, industrial symbiosis.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of different biomolecule analysis methods;
- can handle various instruments and methods for the analysis of biomolecules in the laboratory.
