Course aims
Comprehension of environmental processes from the chemical standpoint. Forming of sustainable view of life.
Brief description of the course
Global and local problems of environmental chemistry. Main characteristics of biosphere. Protection of nature and the environment. Anthrosphere. Cycles of matter. Atmospheric chemistry. Air and air pollutants. Background radioactivity. Nitrogen and nitrogen oxides. Acid rain. Exhaust. Carbon oxides. Greenhouse gases and greenhouse effect. Aerosols. Ozone layer destruction. Aquatic chemistry. Water pollution. Main types of water pollutants, Water treatment and purification. Sewages. Chemistry of pedosphere. Soil chemistry. Pollution of soil. Biofunctions of chemical elements. Toxicants (toxic metals, organochlorine compounds, dioxins). Hazardous and E-series additives in nutrients.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows environmental problems in chemical context at local and global levels;
- is able to apply the knowledge obtained for analysis of processes taking place in various spheres of Earth;
- can differentiate types of contamination and respective environmental risks on the basis of their dangerousness.
