Course aims
To give knowledge about main biochemical processes in living organisms. Forms a basis for further studies of biological subjects.
Brief description of the course
Biochemistry is a general subject which deals with molecular basis of life. Chemical foundations. Bioenergetics and metabolism. Biological oxidation. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids. Main metabolic pathways. Integration of metabolism. Genetic information. Introduction to neurochemistry.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has basic knowledge of biochemistry;
- can explain and analyze the general principles of metabolism and energy; - knows the main metabolic pathways and the relationships between them;
- can solve simpler problems in selected biochemistry-related fields and critically evaluate the results;
- applies relevant and up-to-date methods to solve problems related to biochemistry, both independently and in groups.
