Course aims
The objective of this course is to create an understanding of environmental communication as an interdisciplinary and performative social process. The course develops analytical competences with the help of case studies and practical examples. It gives an overview of major environmental communication theories and their practical uses. Finally, through a larger group work project, the course seeks to further develop problem solving abilities on the field of communication.
Brief description of the course
The course focuses on theories, methods and strategies of environmental communication incl. the role of environmental communication in motivating pro-environmental behavior, its effects, applications and evaluation. At the center of the course work are the communication of environmental information, best practices and the practical application of theoretical knowledge. It explores the different dimensions of environmental awareness and how these are influenced by different factors. Course work also includes the analysis of case studies and the implementation of environmental communication strategies in form of a group work. The course consists of lectures, reading seminars, workshops, and a group work project. The course takes place in English.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- receives an overview of major works and concept in environmental communication;
- understands the importance of environmental communication and its challenges;
- can critically analyze cases of environmental communication ;
- can apply central communication principles e.g. conflict management;
- has a basic understanding how to develop an environmental communication strategy.
