Course aims
To introduce locations related to environmental education (environmental awareness raising) and more broadly with sustainability education (sustainable development education); To develop student’s ability to understand the interdisciplinary and multi-dimensional nature of this field.
Brief description of the course
The subject consists of independent work, on the basis of which various group works and discussions are carried out in seminars held before the excursion. During the excursion, various ecosystems are visited during an approximately half-day excursion, weaving together the diversity of the natural environment, human impacts on the natural environment and environmental education.
Students will learn about the ways in which various institutions, NGOs and specialized centers contribute to environmental and sustainable development education in Estonia, and will also focus on introducing and analyzing environmental problems and current socio-ecological phenomena, which will help to perceive and understand the Estonian environment holistically. After the excursion, students will present a reflection.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- relates knowledge from various scientific fields to the practices of environmental education and sustainable development education, understanding their role in addressing socio-ecological problems;
- individually and in group work, analyze topics and solutions addressed in destinations related to environmental education, applying appropriate observation, discussion and reflection methods;
- values ​​the role of scientific sustainable thinking in environmental and social processes and reflects the contribution of various institutions and initiatives to this;
- recognizes the importance of learning and self-regulation in the educational and career path and reflects on the role of well-being in the learning process and the importance of safety requirements and ethical aspects in the process of conducting an excursion.
