Course aims
To create an understanding of the peculiarities of wetlands as ecosystems, adaptations of animal and plant species for living in wetlands and the importance of wetlands in the world.
Brief description of the course
Overview of wetland types in the world, their origin, distribution, function and importance in the environment. Peculiarities of wetlands as compared to land and water ecosystems, adaptations of organisms for living in wetlands. More detailed treatment of Estonian wetlands - coastal and river meadows, littoral of lakes and mires - processes and adaptations by organisms. The purpose and forms of wetlands protection.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The main topics will be introduced in the lectures, more detailed subjects will be discussed in the workshops, independent work with academic literature, internet pages etc.
