Course aims
To get an overview of different theoretical descriptions: description of plasma by means of particle orbits and by means of plasma as a magneto-hydrodynamical fluid, to understand how the corollaries arise from the theory for plasma properties. To get an overview about applications of plasma physics originating from the construction of TOKAMAK.
Brief description of the course
Definition and types of plasma. Characterizing quantities: frequencies, Debye radius, Landau distance. Fusion of nuclei. Magnetic confinement. Cyclotron motion, plasma drift. Basics of the kinetic theory of plasma, Boltzmann equation, Vlassov equation. Magneto-hydrodynamical theory of plasma. Alfven waves, magneto-hydrodynamical equations. Plasma in TOKAMAK, astrophysical plasma, planetary magnetic field, plasmas of the magnetosphere
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Understanding of high temperature plasma physics, the basic problems and theories;
Ability to implement the integrated disciplines of classical physics to plasma physics problems;
Ability to associate with modern plasma physics and applications of everyday life and school physics.
