Course aims
• To support the development of knowledges in the field of molecular ecology through the solution of practical tasks;
• To support the development of skills that enable to use molecular methods in ecological studies
• To suppoert the development of skills needed for gathering a representative dataset.
Brief description of the course
Following topics will be covered in lectures: molecular markers in ecology, how to get molecular samples from the environment, the optimal size of the sample, how to ensure the purity of samples, how to preserv samples, how to analyse samples.
As an independent work, students have to collect samples and analyze them. The students will independently assess the representativity of collected samples and will present a written raport.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has skills to apply molecular methods in ecological studies;
- has skills to choose an appropriate marker and to collect a representative sample;
- has skills to ensure the purity of samples;
- has skills to assess the adequacy of results and to determine the need for further studies.
