Course aims
To give an overview of the main principles in molecular biology of
the cell.

Brief description of the course
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells. Nucleic Acids. Protein Structure. Proteins as Catalysts. Genetic code. Translation. Recombinant DNA Technology. Viruses, Plasmids, and Transposable Genetic Elements.Membrane Structure. The Cell Nucleus. The Structure of Chromosomes. Chromosome Replication. Intracellular Compartments and Protein Sorting. The Compartmentalization of Higher Cells
The Endoplasmic Reticulum. The Golgi Network. Vesicular Traffic. Energy Conversion: Mitochondria. Energy Conversion: Chloroplasts Cell Signaling.
The Cell-Division Cycle. Cellular Mechanisms of Development. Cell Diversification Differentiated Cells and the Maintenance of Tissues.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of fundamental molecular mechanisms that underlie cellular processes;
- has capability to orientate oneself in contemporary applications of gene technology.
