Course aims

To develop prerequisites for the acquisition of oral and written language skills in Portuguese at A1 level (Breakthrough) according to ELP (the European Language Portfolio). The course is designed to target the students who have no knowledge of Portuguese

Brief description of the course

Integrated development of the proficiency of the four language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) in accordance with the A1 language level. Systematic treatment of Portuguese phonetics, grammar, vocabulary and orthography. Expansion of vocabulary on the following topics: people; professions; places (including place of residence); finding one’s way at the university and in the city; reality and wishes.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to use learned forms in everyday topics in compiling oral and written texts;
- can recognise and form learned grammatical forms, understand everyday speech, read simpler descriptive and simpler fictional texts;
- is able to read correctly simpler texts in Portuguese;
- is able to pass an A1 level proficiency exam.
