Course aims
To give basic knowledge about relations between culture and interaction, cultural differences, basic concepts of multilingualism and multiculturalism and the factors influencing them. During the course students will get acquainted with behaviour patterns conditioned by cultural differences, language, culture and identity issues in a multilingual society. Students will learn to employ theory in practice (role-playing, study situation, practice of ascription, small group work, and work in pairs).
Brief description of the course
Types of culture and models in multicultural society (G. Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory). M. J. Bennet’s model of intercultural sensitivity. E. T. and M. R. Halls’ behavioural components of culture. Ethnic boundaries vs. cultural boundaries. Ethnic identity, linguistic identity, cultural identity and imperial identity. Changing cultural space of Estonia.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has basic knowledge about intercultural differences;
- can orientate in basic approaches to intercultural communication studies, knows the most important theories;
- knows how it is better to study one’s linguistic and cultural behaviour, accommodate with foreign culture and communicate with a person coming from a different cultural background;
- knows the basic approaches to identity studies and problems.
