Course aims
This course is an introduction to issues and trends in intercultural communication. In this course, you will read scholarship from various research perspectives that will introduce you to what is intercultural communication. You will learn what intercultural communication theory is. The main objectives are:

- To introduce the fundamentals of intercultural communication from a discourse and anthropological perspective.
- To provide a better understanding of people’s actions as always contextually situated.
- To become aware of cultural aspects of one’s communication.
Brief description of the course
The course provides a panoramic overview of intercultural communication studies from a discourse perspective, placing emphasis on language and ethnographic work as key components in order to better understand intercultural communication processes in today’s world. Students will be introduced to recent theoretical developments in the field and methodological issues. Debates will revolve around relevant sites where intercultural communication is essential to the understanding of social inequalities.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of the fundamentals of intercultural discourse and communication;
- understands of the theoretical models behind the field of intercultural communication from a discourse perspective, the ethnography of speaking and language in social use.
