Course aims
The aim of the course is the survey key topics, themes, theories, and methods in the study of intercultural communication.
Brief description of the course
The course surveys key topics, themes, theories, and methods in the study of intercultural communication. The first half of the course will briefly introduce key topics and themes, including but not limited to, intercultural competence, interculturality, stereotyping, lingua franca communication, and nationalism.
The second half of the course will use these topics and themes to explore how qualitative discourse analysis can be used to study intercultural communication. Theoretical and methodological issues discussed in the second half of the course include, but are not limited to, how to identify a topic and formulate a relevant research question, how to do discourse analysis, and how to design a study.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to identify and discuss key topics and themes in intercultural communication research;
- can situate key topics and themes in intercultural communication research within a specific region or country;
- can identify a topic or theme to research;
- is able to formulate research questions that are relevant to intercultural communication research;
- can explain what discourse analysis is;
- is able to design an intercultural communication study.
