Course aims
The main aim of this course is to enhance critical intercultural media literacy through the analysis of selected films from celebrated directors like Fassbinder and Kaurismäki to less well-known directors like González Mitjáns.
Brief description of the course
By drawing on key concepts from critical intercultural communication, postcolonial studies and psychology, students will explore contemporary films as mirrors and promoters of particular identity constructs and patterns of cultural encounters. This includes a discussion of mono-, multi, inter- and transculturality, internal colonialism and tribalism as presented in fictional films and documentaries.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- demonstrates a textual and contextual knowledge of films which deal with intercultural encounters in the context of international migration;
- shows a critical knowledge of the theoretical literature which explores intercultural encounters in film and/or other narrative;
- researches, synthesises and articulates cinematic portrayals of intercultural encounters and the negotiation of identities.
