Course aims
The aim of the class is to provide students with an understanding of the historical, political, and cultural context of the European Union, and the challenges it currently faces. The class will explore the historical development of European values and how they have shaped the EU today, analyzing the concept of Eurocentrism and its impact on the EU. It will also evaluate the role of the EU in addressing European crises, and the challenges of creating a cohesive intercultural identity within the EU. The aim of the class is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand and critically evaluate the current issues and challenges facing the EU, and to engage in a dialogue about the future of the EU.
Brief description of the course
The course aims to explore the various issues and challenges facing the European Union today from an intercultural perspective. The program will delve into the history of European values and crises, and how they have evolved over time. It will also cover the concept of Eurocentrism and its impact on the EU, as well as the Peace-Project in history and present time.
Additionally, the program will cover economic-projects such as the common currency and fiscal policies, as well as trade issues of the EU. The course addresses social security systems, transnationalism, and border-regimes such as Schengen, freedom of movement, Frontex and its impact on the EU. The course will also explore the topic of "European Identity" and its implications for the EU.
The course will finally look at the current issues and challenges facing the EU from a political science perspective. The course will include discussions on the role of the EU in addressing European crises, and the challenges of creating a cohesive intercultural identity within the EU. It will conclude with a discussion, where participants will have the opportunity to share their perspectives and engage in a deeper dialogue about the future of the EU.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the historical development of European values and how they have shaped the EU today;
- evaluates the role of the EU in addressing European crises and the challenges of creating a cohesive intercultural identity within the EU;
- understands some historical contexts of the EU-Peace Project and its changes over time;
- analyses the social security systems, transnationalism, and border-regimes such as Schengen, freedom of movement, Frontex and its impact on the EU;
- knows how to combine this understanding with the historical, political and economic contexts of the European Union;
- understands current issues and challenges facing the EU and the role of the EU in addressing them taking into account the role of culture in shaping political and economic integration in the EU;
- develops their research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, as well as their ability to engage in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue.
