Course aims

To give an overview of visual storytelling techniques used; to see journalistic material as alloy of visual and textual part. To give an overview of photojournalism and its main genres. Practical work.

Brief description of the course

Course includes an overview on traditional techniques of visual storytelling in pressmedia: photo, typography, montage, drawing, collage.
Gives oportunities to use visual storytelling with multimeedia tools.
Genres of photojournamism, functions of journalistic photo, etc.
Picture and word.
Iconic pictures. Documentary and art.
Using photos in newspapers and online.
How to make photoreportage and photostory? Practical tasks.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
­- understands importance of visual storytelling in nowadays journalism;
­- knows different multimedia tools used for visual storytelling in journalism;
­- knows how to use multimedia tools for visual storytelling.
