Brief description of the course
The historical development of Personal, Social and Health Education, its place in the basic school curriculum, its aims and learning content. The application of general didactic principles in the context of Personal, Social and Health Education. Key themes: self, self and health, self and others. Relating the self to the immediate environment. Behavioural norms and their connection with peers’ needs and rights. Coping in the social environment. Safety and risks to safety. Ensuring traffic safety. Information and objects. Self and homeland. Understanding the human being as a whole in Personal, Social and Health Education: the interconnections between the body, health, needs, health behaviour, and everyday choices. Principles of healthy nutrition and their application in everyday life. Supporting learning engagement. Principles of autonomy-supportive and structured teaching in the planning and implementation of Personal, Social and Health Education lessons.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- demonstrates knowledge of the aims, content, learning outcomes, and learning resources of Personal, Social and Health Education;
- knows the basic principles of human body structure, functioning, and needs in the context of Personal, Social and Health Education;
- understands the main functions of organ systems and organs, as well as the general principles of their interdependence;
- knows the principles of healthy nutrition, physical activity, rest, and care for the body;
- is able to relate basic concepts of human anatomy and physiology to everyday choices concerning health behaviour and self-care;
- is able to apply basic didactic principles in planning and preparing Personal, Social and Health Education lessons for the first stage of basic school;
- understands the role of learning engagement in the planning and implementation of Personal, Social and Health Education lessons;
- is able to design Personal, Social and Health Education lessons based on the principles of autonomy-supportive and structured teaching;
- knows the teaching methods commonly used in Personal, Social and Health Education and is able to select and apply them critically, flexibly, and creatively.
