Course aims
To provide students with an overview of models of cognitive development (related to attention, memory and learning), how individual differences in cognitive development manifest in educational individual needs and what kind of research methods are available to assess different aspects of cognitive functionality. To create the necessary environment to facilitate students' scientific thinking and to develop argument- and knowledge-based self-expression.
Brief description of the course
The course will start with a short and basic introduction into cognitive psychology (research questions and goals) and the notion of development (from the perspective of the nature-nurture debate). Prominent and general accounts of cognitive development (e.g., Piaget’s stage concept and contemporary interpretations of it) and developmental models of more specific cognitive constructs (e.g., executive control functions) will then be discussed before outlining specific ways to measure and meaningfully interpret individual differences in such constructs. Finally, practical implications of these models and measures will be highlighted by the example of (instructional) design principles for inclusive discovery learning scenarios.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has theoretical knowledge of cognitive development;
- is able to relate different aspects of cognitive development to individual educational needs;
- has become familiar with concepts and questions in the fields of cognitive and developmental psychology;
- is able to search critically reflect course-related research literature.
