Course aims
The objective of the course is to deepen the understanding of the intellectual framework and the practical issues of curriculum as the centrepiece of formal education and of curriculum theory with a modern interdisciplinary approach to education research. Curriculum theory serves to broaden the understanding of the historical, political and social context of educational reforms and movements.
Brief description of the course
The course is an introduction to the field of curriculum studies which deals with questions such as what is curriculum, which knowledge is of most worth, is curriculum a product or a process? While exploring the philosophical and culturally diverse intellectual traditions of schooling such as the Anglo-American curriculum and German/continental Didaktik, it is seeking to interpret and understand current educational issues such as education in the age of globalization and curriculum change. The course also introduces some critical approaches to curriculum research, notably ideology and discourse critique as well as social class, gender and racial issues.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to participate in the intellectual conversations regarding curriculum policy and curriculum theory along with current curriculum issues;
- can engage in critical curriculum studies and will be qualified to create new knowledge in the field.
- is able to interpret their own educational experiences and observations based on their knowledge of curriculum theory.
