Course aims
To create opportunities for obtaining an overview of children's growth and development environments and children's interaction with different growth environments (home and kindergarten growth environment). To create opportunities for students to understand the meaning and necessity of a play environment in preschool education, and to develop the skill of analysing different developmental environments. To support the student's readiness to create a safe development and play environment that supports learning for children up to the age of 8.
Brief description of the course
An overview of observing the growth environment and the child's development and different theoretical starting points. The influence of the surrounding environment in different periods of a child's development. Different growth environments (family, kindergarten) and conditions of creating play environments. A play environment's safety and compliance with health requirements. Play materials and their classification and the play environment in the preschool curriculum.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the influence of growth environment factors on a child's physical, emotional, cognitive and social development;
- understands the importance of creating an appropriate developmental and play environment during the sensitive periods of a child's development;
- is able to analyse and assess the growth environment according to children's needs;
- is able to use a physical learning environment, guaranteeing its safety and shaping it according to children's needs, learning aims and health requirements;
- understands the importance of cooperation with other organisation members in creating a growth environment.
