Course aims

The aim of professional placement in libraries is to build up the relation between theoretical knowledge acquired during the studies with practical work in libraries.
To encourage students to get new practical knowledge and experience.

Brief description of the course

Library as an informational, educational and cultural institution.
Library types, mission and structure. The factors that affect library services. Library management and administration. The principles of library collection development. Collection management. Recording, indexing of books, serials, music, e-resources. Library services.
Prerequisites: INT6005 Bibliographic Description and Classification, INT6006 Indexing and Abstracting, INT6007 Collection Management, INT6009 Infoallikad ja infootsing, INT6011 Information Services

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
Knowledge on the different functions of library, the library place in the library network;
Knowledge and skills for creation and administration of bibliographic and other databases;
Knowledge on the development, organisation and administration of library collections;
Knowledge and skills for information retrieval from library databases and collections, for determination of information need.
