Course aims
To provide an overview of the field of level and environment design for digital games. To offer students an opportunity to practice and develop skills relevant to this field.
Brief description of the course
Level and environment design in digital games. Locations, stages, and missions. Level editing software and game engines.

Key maxims of level design: utilizing the mechanics, directing the player, resource distribution, gameplay alteration, difficulty progression.

Spatial organization and constraints in game levels. Bi-directionality and nonlinearity. Environmental storytelling and symbolism.

Level design in different game genres: puzzle, platformer, first-person shooter, role-playing game, turn-based strategy. Playtesting and iterative level design.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the basic principles and terms in level design, have a grasp of the peculiarities of designing levels in a range of genres, and be able to use level editing software.
