Course aims
Students will be familiar with the major works of Japanese literature and are able to differentiate main genres of poetry and prose. Sudents are able to describe the features of literary works from different historical periods. Participants will be prepared for individual study of literature and are able to take courses that require preliminary knowledge of Japanese literature.
Brief description of the course
During the course various works of literature from 8th century to present day are introduced. Reading list includes texts representing various genres of poetry and prose (waka, monogatari, nikki, uihitsu, haiku, haibun, shoshosetsu). Typical examples of various genres help students to grasp the differences between genres and modes of writing.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- Will know the major works of Japanese literature and is able to discuss them;
- Is familiar with most important genres of Japanese literature and can identify genres based on their characteristics;
- Is familiar with periods and movements of Japanese literature;
- Can independently analyse written works and present finding in both oral and written form.
