Course aims
To create opportunities for acquiring theoretical and factual knowledge about the intellectual history of modern China across the ages. To provide the students with a broad and exhaustive overview of a wide range of topics, and teach them how to work with the sources, independently review learned material, establish meaningful connections between events and facts and make informed statements about cultural processes and phenomena in China, developing independent critical thinking. The course gives basic foundational knowledge and skills needed for participation in special courses and seminars on China.
Brief description of the course
The course gives an overview of the development of modern Chinese culture and thought from a historical perspective, and covers topics related to Chinese thought, literature, society, theater, film and visual and figurative arts. The students learn how to distinguish between and recognize the most important cultural and intellectual trends, schools and forms of the aforementioned fields, using basic conceptual categories and concepts and draw meaningful comparisons between Chinese cultural phenomena and the Western tradition. The role played by Chinese culture as a significant constitutive element of a larger East-Asian or global context will also be discussed.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired basic foundational knowledge about the formation and the development of the Chinese cultural tradition across the ages;
- is able to discuss topics learnt in class, contributing an original personal perspective, and contextualize them within their own cultural and historical context;
- has a clear perception of various aspects and areas of Chinese culture (literature, philosophy n, arts including both figurative and visual arts, theater, etc);
- is able to analyse specific cultural phenomena and manifestations of Chinese culture;
- knows and is able to use the appropriate technical vocabulary;
- has the ability to compare Chinese cultural phenomena with the Western intellectual and cultural tradition.
