Course aims
Students will acquire knowledge of premodern Japanese cultural history and are able to describe different historical periods. Students will be familiar with the main events of various historical periods and are able to describe changes that took place in society, religion, philosophy, aesthetics and other areas.
Brief description of the course
The course will give an overview of the development of premodern Japanese society and culture. During the course an overview of different historical periods (Nara, Heian, Kamakura etc.) is given and various issues are discussed in light of the development of modern Japanese state. During the course student will read various
relevant texts from different periods of cultural history and study important works of art.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can name different periods of premodern Japanese history and describe changes in society and culture;
- is familiar with major texts and is able to introduce their authors;
- can name important works of art that are characteristic of their particular period;
- can outline continuities or discontinuities of past events with modern Japan.
