Course aims
Aim of the course is to provide opportunities for acquiring theoretical and factual knowledge about contemporary Chinese society. The course provides an overview of the structure of contemporary Chinese society and of major socio-cultural phenomena of contemporary relevance, prepares students for conducting independent research or analysis of different aspects of Chinese society and teaches practical skills which can be used for working in different fields, such as journalism, communication, foreign relations, or the public sector. The course provides basic knowledge and training of skills needed for participation in special courses and seminars on China.
Brief description of the course
The students acquire knowledge on contemporary Chinese society as well as practical skills needed for analyzing social processes which take place in China today. Sociopolitical phenomena and problems related to the governance of the P.R.C.’s fourth and fifth generations of leaders (2002-2022) are discussed in seminar classes. The subjects to be discussed include topics such as, for instance, the situation and living conditions of Chinese ethnic minorities, the impacts of the so called “one child policy”, phehnomena of urbanisation and globalisation in China, the use of the internet in connection to personal freedom and liberties, and other aspects relevant to the understanding of contemporary civil society, etc. The students learn how to relate basic knowledge on China with the subjects discussed in class and acquire practical skills needed for developing and defending personal views in debate.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired an overview of a broad range of relevant topics and issues related to contemporary Chinese society;
- is able to establish meaningful connections on the basis of the basic knowledge on contemporary China acquired in class, putting into relation with specific topics discussed in class;
- has developed the ability to analyse criticially texts assigned for the seminar classes;
- has developed independent critical thinking based on acquired information;
- has developed the necessary skills to present their views on Chinese society in a convincing manner, to and defend their opinion in debate.
