Course aims
Enable the students to understand the historical development of the Arabic language; to make it possible for the students to compare MSA with Classical Arabic.
Brief description of the course
The course gives an overview of the history of the Arabic language starting from its first appearance until today. The fact that the rise of Arabic to the status of an international language is due to the rise of Islam will be pointed out. The Arabic language will be set into the historical framework of the Semitic languages and further to the Afro-Asian background. Focus will be on the main historical stages of development such as the language of pre-Islamic poetry, classical language, MSA, and the dialects.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of the history of the Arabic language;
- has ability to see the differences in the styles of the Arabic texts from different periods;
- has skills to employ the knowledge of the history of the Arabic language in the research.
