Course aims
The course aims to provide an overview of the Epic (4th you BC - 4th century AD) and the Classic literature (4th-14th century) in Sanskrit.
Brief description of the course
The course deals with the classical Sanskrit literature of India according to the traditional genres: epic literature (Mahabharata, Ramayana), the Puranas, dramas (Kālidāsa etc.), narrative literature (Hitopadeśa, Śukasaptati, Pancatantra, Daśakumāracarita) and poetry.
The extensive reading material (most famous texts of Indian classical literature) is a mandatory component of these lectures.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of the Indian epic and kl. Literature;
- has ability to analyze literature in India;
- has the ability to compare India with other Asian countries, literature, literature.
