Course aims
The course aims to provide an overview of classical Sanskrit phonology, morphology and syntax, and to learn to read and interpret written in simple classical Sanskrit poetry (epic literature) and prose forms (narrative literature).
Brief description of the course
Introductory lecture provides an overview of the history of the Sanskrit language: Sanskrit and Indo-European language family (A); Vedic Sanskrit (b), the classical Sanskrit grammar (C), the epic Sanskrit (d); Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit (e).
During the course, learning about the writing system (Devanagari script), rules of Phonology (samdhi) and grammatical categories.
Independent work: a simplified translation of the Sanskrit texts, grammar exercises.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has basic knowledge of Sanskrit grammar;
- has basic skills to deal with Sanskrit texts;
- has ability to translate simple texts with the help of a dictionary and teacher.
