Brief description of the course
The course provides a systematic overview of the development, main forms, themes and authors of Arabic-language literature. The main focus is on Arabic-language literature, while Hebrew and Persian literature are also discussed to a lesser extent for comparative purposes. The course covers literary developments from the pre-Islamic period to the present day, addressing pre-Islamic prose and poetry, classical literature, Andalusian literature, Sufism, and modern and contemporary literature, including the Nahda and contemporary prose and poetry. As a practical component, students read selected passages in the original language as well as translations of Arabic-language poetry and prose. Lectures are complemented by seminars in which literary texts are analysed and discussed and methods of literary analysis are applied. The course supports the development of analytical and comparative skills and the acquisition of the foundations of independent academic writing in the field of Arabic literature.
