Brief description of the course
This course interrogates film analysis as a method instead of teaching it as a skill. We examine the epistemological commitments and limits of competing analytical approaches —
formalist, cultural, feminist, transnational, archival — and adapt these tools to audiovisual objects beyond mainstream narrative cinema, including serial television and broadcast formats.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to critically evaluate competing methods of film analysis and articulate their epistemological commitments and blind spots;
- is able to adapt analytical tools to audiovisual objects beyond mainstream narrative cinema, such as serial television, broadcast formats and non-fiction forms;
- is able to produce a methodologically self-aware analytical essay that justifies its analytical choices in dialogue with current scholarly debates;
- is able to position their analytical work in relation to their own disciplinary
background and research interests.
