Course aims
To give a systematic overview of the nature and history of Gnosticism as a religious movement from later antiquity.
Brief description of the course
Gnosticism is a term, which is nowadays linked to all esoterics and myterious. In religious science Gnosticism is one specific religious movement, which was founded and spread during a specific period in a specific geographical area - during the first centuries AD in the empire of Rome. This movement had many links to Jewish religion, Christianity and other religions in the Roman empire. This course gives thorough overview of Gnosticism.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student has an overview of Gnostic literature and sources on Gnosticism, the history of studying Gnosticism and different theories on the origins of Gnosticism, and is able to understand the main teachings and beliefs of Gnosticism.
