Course aims
To offer an introduction to adaptation theory and analysis by focusing on the relationship between film and literature/comic/video game. To give an overview of some of the most important concepts, issues, and debates related to adaptation studies. To create opportunities for enhancing presentation and writing skills.
Brief description of the course
This course offers an introduction to the field of adaptation studies. Over the course of this course, some of the most important concepts, issues, and debates related to adaptation studies will be discussed by focusing on selected film adaptations and their sources. Apart from the more common type adaptations which focus on the transition of a literary narrative to film, we will also explore adaptation in relation to other forms of media, e.g. comics and video games. As case studies, we have included popular as well as lesser-known adaptations. Apart from the introductory seminars, each seminar focuses on a key concept (remediation, fidelity, intertextuality, authorship, nostalgia, etc.) or a topic (adapting history, adaptation market, the relationship between video games and films, etc.) which will be explored by focusing on a film adaptation and its precursor (novel, short story, video game, comic).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- will be familiar with key theorists and theories in adaptation studies, including the topics and concepts of fidelity, intertextuality, authorship, remediation, transmediality, nostalgia, and many others;
- has acquired analytical skills for analysing films, literary narratives, comics, and video games by using discussed concepts and theories;
- understands how medium specificity and other reasons affect different adaptation choices;
- will be acquainted with 12 different films and source materials in different mediums.
