Course aims

Provide opportunities to become aqcuainted with the main principles and ways of thinking in semiotics.
Create pre-requisites for acquiring the main terminology and theories of semiotics.
Provide opportunities for developing knowledge about the main authors and works of semiotics.

Brief description of the course

Systematic overview of the main issues concerning semiotics.
Topics: semiotics and structuralism; philosophical problems of semiotics; the notion of semiosis and it’s dimensions; semiotics and communication; semiotical hermeneutics.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of the main issues, terminology and branches of semiotics;
- has ability to orientate in the main issues of semiotics and analyse them;
- has knowledge of the major schools and major authors of semiotics.
