Course aims
The main aims of the course are to gain knowledge and understanding of the main ethical theories (e.g. consequentialism, deontological, value and virtue theories), and develop the skills to apply these theories in analysing some of the key contemporary ethical questions and problems.
Brief description of the course
In the first part of the course we will read some of the key contemporary and classical texts of the main ethical philosophies, and interpret these by focusing on questions such as: what is good and what is evil? Right and wrong? Just and Unjust? Can moral evaluations and judgements be objective or are they inevitably merely subjective? Are moral values and virtues universal, at least some of them, or are they always culturally conditioned and contingent? What obligations, if any, do we have towards our fellow humans? In the second part, we will be geared towards practical moral philosophy and some of its more specific contemporary questions of particular urgency, such as on environmental ethics and the question - what obligations do we have towards other living beings, the environment, the Planet and future generations? Additionally, we will also interpret and analyse key questions and challenges of ethics of technology, medicine and war.
