Course aims

Brief description of the course

The course provides an overview of aesthetics as a discipline that studies theories of sensory perception, the distinctive nature of aesthetic experience, and aesthetic qualities in both everyday life and art. The course focuses primarily on three areas of aesthetics: the aesthetics of art, everyday aesthetics, and environmental aesthetics.
Texts from the Western aesthetic tradition from antiquity to the present day are examined. The course also addresses the emergence and transformation of the concept of aesthetics in the modern period.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the main periods, schools, and authors of aesthetics;
- is familiar with basic theories and concepts of aesthetics and is able to use them in order to analyze certain aesthetic phenomena;
- analyzes texts and assess their meaning and importance from aesthetic point of view;
- is able to see conations between the concepts and theories of aesthetics and other branches of philosophy, and eventually other humanities.
