Course aims
Introduction to the main concepts and problems of the German linguistics today. The course focuses on contemporary developments of German and on the relationship between language and society.
Brief description of the course
The course deals with current developments in German linguistics. This includes sociolinguistics (language and social status, age, gender); dialectology (urban-rural confrontation, traditional and modern methods for studying regional language use); Eco linguistics (including the use of minorities, migrants, the role of German as a foreign language); the role of German in the world (German as a pluricentric language, diaspora, language islands); the relationship between language and ideology in a globalizing society; discourse linguistics (issues of constructing linguistic reality).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the main factors of the German language and German society, as well as the development of the language in modern society, both in Germany and in other German - speaking countries;
- is familiar with the relevant terminology and has an overview of the development and functioning of modern German within the extend of the literature and topics covered.
