Course aims
Offers an overview of German film history until today seen in the context of historical and cultural events. Gives insights into German film theory and shows different ways to analyze films (Kracauer, Benjamin). Supports the development of language skills through watching German films, writing analytical reports and giving presentations.
Brief description of the course
1. German film history: German expressionist silent film (Robert Wiene, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau) and its influence in cinematography and culture as a whole.
2. Early sound film. Literature and film: Heinrich Mann: “Professor Unrat” (1905) and Josef Sternberg: “Der blaue Engel” (1929/30). Marlene Dietrich’s legend.
3. Film as a tool of propaganda in National Socialist era (Leni Riefenstahl).
4. German post-war „Heimatfilm“ and its function in the society.
5. Rainer Werner Fassbinder and „Der Neue Deutsche Film“ in the 70ies.
6. Internationally recognized German films, f.e. „Das Boot“ (1982), “Lola rennt” (1998), “Das Leben der Anderen” (2006).
7. The role of German cinematography in interpreting the past, f.e. „Der Untergang“ (2004), “Goodbye Lenin” (2003), “Das Wunder von Bern” (2003) and the present. Fatih Akin and his works.
8. German contemporary comedy movies, f.e. “Ich bin Dein Mensch (2021), “Nebenan” (2021).

9. Classics of German television shows, f.e. „Tatort“, “Schwarwaldklinik”, “Cobra 11” and their cultural context. .

10. Influential German authors of international film theory: Siegfried Kracauer, Walter Benjamin.

The list of films might change due to the research areas of the lecturer. Further details will be given in the course program.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a historical overview of German cinematography;
- is able to analyze German films as tools for analyzing history and transmitting new interpretations of history;
- uses different methodological tools to analyze films.
