Course aims
Knowledge about the main periods in the development of the French language, analysing old texts in the framework of its morphological and phonological development.
Brief description of the course
The course gives an overview of the regularities of the phonetical and morphological development of the French language from the gallo-roman period up to nowadays. Texts like Serment de Strasbourg, Vie de St Alexis, poems by Rutebeuf, chronicle by Villehardouini etc from the Medieval period; M. de Montaigne, La Pleiade etc from the Renaissance period; Malherbe, Boileau etc from the Classical period are analysed. Practical exercises include word derivation from Latin into French.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knowledge about the main periods in the development of the French language, knowledge about the language purification or renewal movements and individual authors who play an important role in the development of the French language.
Capacity to analyse old texts from the morphological viewpoint on the background of a certain period of the development of the language; capacity to derive French words from Latin, explaining the regularities of phonetics
Ability to regard the French language as an organism developing according to its inner rules, ability to see the tendencies of the future development of French.
